Moorooka Salisbury Parish:
St Brendan and pope St Pius X communities
The Catholic parish of Moorooka Salisbury incorporates two churches, St Brendan’s, Moorooka and St Pius X, Salisbury.
It is a parish within the Archdiocese of Brisbane.
St Brendan’s Church opened in 1919, a wooden structure built as a result of the hard work and contributions of a dedicated Catholic community.
In 1952, Archbishop James Duhig purchased land in Golda Avenue, Salisbury, and the first Mass was celebrated in a small dwelling on the property.
In 1961, Salisbury became a parish in its own right.
In 1969, fundraising by Salisbury parishioners culminated in the building of a new brick “in the ground” church, then regarded as a very modern church design.
In 2007, the two parishes were amalgamated to form the one parish of Moorooka Salisbury. Perhaps, in a unique way, because of its history, it was a “getting back together” with both congregations in the parish blending harmoniously.
Our Parish Prayer:
O Gracious God, we pray for the needs of our parish; comfort the sick, the lonely and the elderly.
We pray for our families, and all those seeking Your comfort; help them to find peace and hope in You.
Bless our Parish Schools and encourage us to welcome into our community the young people of all ages.
May we see You in each person in our parish community and welcome You into our work, our homes, and our hearts.
Help us to have a strong faith and trust in You as each of us lives out the faith mission we are called to in this world.
Through Christ Our Lord. Amen.
St Brendan, pray for us.
St Pius X, pray for us.
St Mary MacKillop, pray for us.
OPENING PRAYER AT THE II VATICAN COUNCIL (1962):
We stand before you, Holy Spirit, conscious of our sinfulness, but aware that we gather in your name.
Come to us, remain with us, and enlighten our hearts. Give us light and strength to know your will, to make it our own, and to live it in our lives.
Guide us by your wisdom, support us by your power, for you are God, sharing the glory of Father and Son.
You desire justice for all: enable us to uphold the rights of others; do not allow us to be misled by ignorance or corrupted by fear or favour.
Unite us to yourself in the bond of love and keep us faithful to all that is true.
As we gather in your name may we temper justice with love, so that all our decisions may be pleasing to you, and earn the reward promised to good and faithful servants.
You live and reign with the Father and the Son, One God, forever and ever.
Amen.
